RĀBIʿA AL-BAṢRIYYAH R.H السالم عليكم و رمحة اهلل و بركاته Firstly, we welcome the new staff that have joined our school, have settled into their roles and are ensuring that pupils are able to continue to progress in their lessons. May Allah reward you all for your efforts. CULTURE DAY MS SHAFIA LEXICA In addition, the end of year exams will be taking place between 2nd and 12th May. We encourage parents to motivate their daughters to revise thoroughly so that they can achieve their full potential. Furthermore, there are several upcoming events next term and we will be entering the month of Ramadan. I pray that Allah SWT makes it easy for us to fast and gives us all the ability to reap the rewards of this very blessed month. Ameen. R Mogra (Head teacher) Ramadan 1438 This year, most of Ramadan will occur during term time. There are several reasons why Ramadan is special to us: The Qur'an was first revealed during this month The gates of Heaven are open The gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained up in Hell. The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful. - (al-baqarah 2:185) The actual night that the Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) is called Laylat ul Qadr, and to stand in prayer on this one night is better than a thousand months of worship. We hope that Allah grants us all the ability to fast and worship him sincerely during this month. ا لل ه م ب ر ك ل ن ا ف ر ج ب و ش ع ب ان و ب ل غ ن ا ر م ض ان Oh Allah! Grant us Barakah (blessings) during (the months of) Rajab and Sha ban, and allow us to reach Ramadan. Ameen. 3 3 Once Rābiʿa al-baṣriyyah RH, the famous saint and wali of Allah, was overcome with tiredness and fell asleep. A thief entered and took her shawl, but he was unable to find his way out. When he replaced the shawl, he saw the exit. Again, he took the shawl and lost the way. He replaced the shawl and again saw the way out. He repeated this process several times. Then he heard someone saying, Why bring calamity upon yourself? She whose shawl this is, has handed herself over to another Being. Even Shayṭān cannot approach her. A thief is not able to steal her shawl. Leave it and depart. On another occasion, she was asked if she hated Shayṭān. Rābiʿa RH replied, My love for Allah has possessed me (so much) that no place remains for loving or hating, except (loving) Him. Even we can achieve some of this true love by taking small steps; Allah's mercy is not reserved for saints only. The more we dedicate ourselves to Allah, the more benefits we will see in this world and the Hereafter, Insha Allah. 35 Beautiful Ways to Respect Your Parents 1. Put away your phone in their presence 2. Pay attention to what they are saying 3. Accept their opinions 4. Engage in their conversations 5. Look at them with respect 6. Always praise them 7. Share good news with them 8. Avoid sharing bad news with them 9. Speak well of their friends and loved ones to them 10. Keep in remembrance the good things they did 11. If they repeat a story, listen like it's the first time they tell it 12. Don't bring up painful memories from the past 13. Avoid side conversations in their presence 14. Sit respectfully around them 15. Don't belittle/criticise their thoughts and opinions 16. Avoid cutting them off when they speak 17. Respect their age 18. Avoid hitting/disciplining their grandchildren around them 19. Accept their advice and direction 20. Give them the power of leadership when they are present 21. Avoid raising your voice at them 22. Avoid walking in front or ahead of them 23. Avoid eating before them 24. Avoid glaring at them 25. Fill them with pride even when they don't think they deserve it 26. Avoid putting your feet up in front of them or sitting with your back to them 27. Don't speak ill of them to the point where others speak ill of them too 28. Keep them in your prayers whenever possible 29. Avoid seeming bored or tired of them in their presence 30. Avoid laughing at their faults/mistakes 31. Do a task before they ask you to 32. Continuously visit them 33. Choose your words carefully when speaking to them 34. Call them by names they like 35. Make them your priority above anything Parents are treasure on this land, and sooner than you think, that treasure will be buried. Appreciate your parents while you still can. 4 RED NOSE DAY Students dressed in red for Children in Need and raised a whopping ! Well Done to everyone who participated. CHURCH VISIT Our year 10 students visited the Church and learnt about Christianity. They also explored the different parts of the Church. RAF MUSEUM Our year 8 students visited the RAF museum and participated in a workshop on how the soldiers protected themselves during the Cold War. They were also able to inspect some aircrafts and learn the history behind them. 4

5 BOUNCE - TRAMPOLINE PARK The students had fun at the trampoline park as a winning treat for having the most house points. Well done, House of Mina! SOCIAL EVENT The students had lunch and socialised with friends in a relaxing environment. CULTURE DAY For diversity awareness, each year group presented a workshop about a specific culture. Well done to the year 9s who won the competition with their presentation of the Arab culture! 5

6 WORKSHOP ON THE PROPHETS (peace be upon them) Our year 8 students presented a workshop to the rest of the students about 6 different prophets (pbut). HEALTHY BREAKFAST MORNING Our students participated in a healthy breakfast as part of their PSHE studies. We at B.I.G.S. are excited to announce that we participated in the MADE (Muslim Action for Development and Environment) GDE Beacon Award Scheme and we have been awarded a GOLD Award. Our year 7 and 8 students learnt about sustainability being a long term benefit for the environment. They carried out a project of attempting to implement sustainability in their daily lives, such as reducing electricity bills by switching off appliances, reusing leftover meals to make a new meal for their family, and walking to school instead of travelling by car. Well done to everyone who took part! FAMILY FORTUNES Our students participated in a school quiz based on family fortunes. This proved to be very fun and also a source of general knowledge for them. 6

7 Ms Shafia Why did you decide to move from Pakistan to Hong Kong? I didn't decide to move, I was 3 years old when we moved and it was because my maternal grandfather was working there and thought there was better quality of life in Hong Kong compared to Pakistan. How long have you been living in the UK? I've been living in the UK for nearly 13 years. What places did you visit in Hong Kong? I visited the main shopping places we remembered, my old high school, Disneyland, mosques and malls around the main city. How long have you been teaching for? I have been teaching for 3 years. What was your ambition as a child? I always wanted to be a detective and then a surgeon. But don't we all?! Mention a funny incident in your life. When we moved to Hong Kong and were new to all the English signs, my sisters told me that when they saw the sign "Danger do not touch", they used to think it meant whoever touches it is a Dangar which in punjabi means animal! Any advice you have for students? My advice is that focus on your studies, because you have the rest of your life to enjoy, and studies will lead you to have a good job and an easy life, InshaAllah. You should have fun now too, but have a routine for studies and fun. Do not compromise your studies because in 10 years time, you will think back and regret not giving priority to your studies.
